Of course you didn't because
it's insane and the world needs to just stop already.
If you suffer from Mom Guilt,
FOMO, Insta-comparing, or Pinterest stalking you probably get a sudden onset of
anxiety when you realize it's National (fill in the blank) Day and you're
thoroughly UNprepared.
My poor children.
Their life, though.
But it's hard, right? And Moms
are the hardest to fall. Because these are cool things! I mean, National
Zucchini Bread Day? Have you had this? It's salad cake. It's the best.
And to be honest, this
particular holiday isn't actually giving me anxiety but May the 4th?!?!? You
know, Star Wars Day? May the fourth be with you? Or Pi Day? Are you kidding me?
Those days are made of magic and when I'm not prepared for them I feel like
lame Mom.
So let's dissect this a little
so I can offer you a little freedom.
First of all, fun things should
be fun. I give you permission to ENJOY the fun things that you think are fun
and not have pressure or stress or obligation or false expectation to DOOOOO
anything. Just have fun with the fun things if you think they're fun! And if
you don't think they're actually fun (but rather just think you SHOULD
think they're fun) then take a deep breath and thank God you don't have to shred
10 zucchinis.
Secondly, you know what kids really
love and really remember?
How you help them FEEL.
Whether you bake a homemade pie
for National Pi Day or spend the afternoon beside them on the floor playing, be
joyfully present and at peace with your place in this world and what it means
for YOU to be a good Mom. Our kids need their homes to be a place of love and
shelter. Do you know how simple that is?!?! It requires no costume or fancy
ingredient. It only requires their Mom to be happy and grateful and fully
HERSELF.
I want you to be YOU
today.
Undiminished.
Unhindered.
Whole.
Honest.
(as a side note, if you DO
happen to have zucchini on hand and enjoy this sort of thing, here's a recipe for ya.)
